One of the cities that consistently finds itself at the top of the list of most livable cities in Canada, is the picturesque Burlington, Ontario. Nestled perfectly between Toronto and Niagara and running along the shores of Lake Ontario, this small city that boasts museums, art, culinary diversity, and stunning outdoor spaces is highly sought-after for a number of excellent reasons. Today, we’ll take you through a written tour of some of the top reasons why Burlington is so highly sought-after.

Burlington is known to be relatively low on the radar of tourists, which means that all 207,000 residents can peacefully take advantage of the perks that are drawing more and more people in, starting with the green space. Burlington’s beginnings are rooted in horticulture, which means you might not be surprised when you hear that the city is home to the nation’s largest botanical garden (and designated National Historic Site), the Royal Botanical Gardens. With close to 2,500 acres of nature sanctuaries, almost 30 kilometres of nature walks and trails, and more than 300 acres of carefully cultivated gardens (which also include more than 50 species categorized as “at risk”), the Royal Botanical Gardens are an absolute must whether you call this city home or are just passing through.

Accompanying these mesmerizing gardens is a plethora of parks, nature paths, and beaches that run throughout the city. Beautiful Lake Ontario can be enjoyed from several different Instagram-worthy spots including neighbourhood favourites, Bronte Creek Provincial Park, Crawford Lake, Rattlesnake Point, Hilton Falls, Mount Nemo, and Kelso (a favourite amongst winter sports enthusiasts). All these spots and many more cater to those who crave a daily dose of nature and offer the opportunity to partake in activities such as rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, and in the winter, skiing and snowboarding.

When it comes to housing, Burlington has an option for everyone. Whether you’re more attracted to condominium life or are looking for a sizable property, the real estate options are endless. Burlington is home to residents of all ages including those commuting into the city for work as well as retirees who left the business of the city for the peace of the waterfront. For commuters, there is easy access to 400-series highways, as well as an extensive GO-Transit schedule that will make your trips to and from work nearly seamless.

As your work week ends and you start to plan your weekend, of course the thought of where to dine comes to your mind. Burlington’s culinary scene is consistently evolving and beautifully diverse, with new restaurants with tastes and smells from across the globe popping up constantly. There are a number of well-known Burlington favourites – Spencer’s on the Waterfront, 50 Pesos, The Carriage House, and Jake’s Grill and Oyster House – that are must-try's, but in the warmer months you can also look forward to the Burlington Food Truck Festival, Canada’s Largest Ribfest, and a number of pop-ups that arrive annually and bring a wide variety of flavours.

On the note of festivals, Burlington is also home to the Sound of Music Festival, which is one of the largest music festivals in Canada. This nationally renowned showcase event has something for everyone from classical music and jazz to hip-hop, country, R&B, and rock. This annual event takes place at multiple venues throughout downtown Burlington with the largest stage being right on the waterfront at Spencer Smith Park.

Along with music, Burlington has many opportunities to take in the works of local and national artists at the Art Gallery of Burlington. This space not only serves as an outlet to take in mesmerizing works of art but also serves as a local community centre that brings people together in the name of creativity. A visit to the Burlington Art Gallery is free and the perfect way to introduce yourself to some of the art-loving locals.

Burlington boasts a welcoming family-friendly community with plenty of activities for kids and adults alike. With all the attractions we’ve outlined and many more including museums and historical sites, there are countless activities to pass the time during the day, before putting the kids to bed and taking yourselves out to explore the nightlife. Burlington is a neighbourhood that caters to young professionals, families of all sizes, retirees, and everything in-between.
